This one starts slow. Deliberate. Aretha Franklin calling for respect, Boney M floating over a Babylonian river, Earth Wind & Fire already bending time with a remix that sounds like it was made last year. The BPMs barely move at first — and that's the point. This set isn't trying to push you onto a floor. It's trying to remind you where the floor came from.
By the middle, Chic is holding down a bassline that Bernard Edwards basically invented so that house music could exist. Cerrone is doing something that still sounds futuristic. The Michael Zager Band is asking everyone to chant, and they still do — in every DJ booth that's ever sampled them.
Then Chicago arrive with Street Player, Carrie Lucas keeps the funk close to the ground, and Adriano Celentano closes it in Italian — because yes, the funk landed here too, and it sounded exactly like this.Six artists you know.
